Sports Leader

Special Olympics is committed to providing high quality athletic and sports experiences to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Athletes who have participated in Special Olympics training and competition provide a unique perspective to their peers who are competing and developing their athletic abilities and looking to improve their knowledge and performance in a particular sport.

Sport Leaders are experienced Special Olympics athletes that are trained as coaches, officials and other sport leadership roles. They hold a major role in supporting athletes as they achieve their maximum potential.

Event Leader

The role of an Event Leader is to participate in the planning, promotion, and execution process of Special Olympics events. There are several types of leadership roles athletes can do before, during, and after events.

The purpose of the training course is to provide event leaders with the required knowledge that will allow them to take on leadership roles in the planning, promotion, and execution of Special Olympics events.

There was no shortage of amazing fans at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 and each day, fans and family members were able to join in the spirit of the Games helping to support and uplift all those competing.

Athlete Spokesperson

The role of an Athlete Spokesperson is to promote, educate, and inform others about the mission, benefits, and direction of Special Olympics. It goes beyond giving public speeches and interviews, it is about spreading the word about the Special Olympics movement through different outlets.

The purpose of the Athlete Spokesperson training course is to train athletes the required leadership skills that will allow them to participate effectively as spokespeople.

Athlete Representative

Athletes need to drive Special Olympics work. To achieve this, there needs to be athlete representation on all leadership groups. Athlete Representatives help set policy, make recommendations for continuous improvement, introduce new ideas, and implement those ideas to improve local programming.

The purpose of the training is to equip athlete leaders with leadership skills that allow them to participate effectively as Athlete Representatives.
