Using Sport to Build Inclusion Between Mainstream and Special Schools for Students with Intellectual Disabilities in Eastern Europe

Special Olympics teams in Europe Eurasia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia along with Professor Roy McConkey of the University of Ulster have published a pioneering academic paper reflecting on the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools programme. The study demonstrates the social gains that can be obtained by linking special and mainstream schools through sports.

Special Olympics in Europe and Eurasia encompasses a diverse range of cultures, languages and customs. From Iceland to Uzbekistan and from Finland to Malta, Special Olympics athletes and supporters are dedicated to promoting respect, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities. We do this primarily through innovative, expert-led sports, health, youth and schools and athlete leadership programming.
