EKS Day Resources

On 24 September 2011, the second global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Day) was celebrated around the world, bringing together people with and without intellectual disabilities in sport activities to honor the inspiration, impact and indomitable spirit of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.  While nearly 4 million Special Olympics athletes and millions of coaches, families, fans and friends live her legacy and lead our movement every day, we unite on EKS Day in over 100 countries and thousands of communities to show the world the power of sport to create opportunities of acceptance.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day Overview

Our message is that we “Play Unified to Live Unified.” Our activities on EKS Day are focused on sport because Eunice Kennedy Shriver believed that on the playing field we forget about our differences and forge bonds that recognize our mutual humanity.  During this global event, we invite you to join us in playing unified that we may teach the world to live unified.  To give ever new life to Eunice Kennedy Shriver's vision, we are calling the athletes, families and friends of Special Olympics to come together in a day of inclusive sport and play and we need your help. EKS Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday in September. The third annual global EKS Day is set for 22 Sept. 2012.

Rise Up Revolutionaries!

And today, I watched this video by Stu Chaifetz about teachers and adults who bullied Akian, a ten year old with autism in Cherry Hill New Jersey.  It is a tale of fear and rage, as heartbreaking as it is infuriating.  It is a call to all of us to rise up again, to demand change in Cherry Hill, to ask for an accounting from those who were abusive.   Our own young leaders in Special Olympics Project Unify will understand the horrors of this video perhaps better than anyone.  In a special way, I ask their leadership now.read more »
