Initiating SOI's Hiring Process
The goal of every recruitment effort is to find the best qualified candidate whose skill and ability meet the job requirements and whose interests and experience align to the mission, vision and values of Special Olympics International. Here's an overview of the process.
Positions Covered by the Recruiting Process
- New positions
- Replacement positions
- Temporary positions
- Extensions for U.S. based temporary employees
- Intern positions (paid and non-paid)
Whether a position is newly created or a replacement, giving careful consideration to the duties and responsibilities while writing or revising the job description will ensure you select the right candidate for the job.
Job descriptions are not only the basis for selection decisions but the criteria by which you will evaluate the performance of your new employee. Well-written job descriptions also accelerate an employee’s contribution to their division/department and the Movement. One helpful tool is the Job Level Descriptors, which is a guideline for determining appropriate skills and levels of experience for a job.
Prepare Before Starting to Recuit

Where do I find the tools to write a job description?
HQ Human Resources has posted the Job Level Descriptors document on MySOI under Human Resources. The HR folks will assist you if necessary, in developing an accurate competency-based job profile.
Once I have a written job description how do I initiate the hiring process?
Recruitment cannot begin without a completed and approved Job Requisition Form, also available on MySOI under Human Resources.
Before sending the Job Requisition Form to HR, have it approved by your department head and SOI Finance. The approvals can be in the form of consenting e-mails.

Attach all of the following to an email to Donna Gillotte:

Who prepares the Job Requisition Form?
The Hiring Manager prepares all forms and obtains all approvals.
What happens once all the approvals are obtained?
The job description will be reviewed by Human Resources, verifying that the skills and experience are in line with the requirements of the job. HR will also confirm the position has been approved to budget and assign a salary grade. Once HR signs off on the Job Requisition Form, they will contact the Hiring Manager to schedule the recruitment strategy meeting and you are on your way to finding talent.
